David looked out the window of the school bus as it went from stop to stop. He wanted to get home and play with his new basketball. He would have spent the time talking to his seatmate, but it was a girl! Why did she have to sit down beside him? He knew her; Lisha was in his third grade class. But he’d much rather sit with Jimmy or Clark or any of the guys. No one wants to sit with a girl! Plus, she’s the biggest tattletale in the class. She told the teacher yesterday that Clark gave her the bird, and Clark got in trouble.
David was beginning to like it here in Oakdale. He still missed the boys he played with back in the city. But he loved the freedom the suburbs offered. He heard Mom tell Aunt Lucy the children here were “wholesome,” not like those gangs in the city. She was much more relaxed in their new home. She pretty much let David ride his bike anywhere he wanted now.
The kids in his new class really were pretty cool, especially Jimmy. Jimmy and Clark usually asked David to play with them at recess. They liked to shoot hoops, even though they weren’t very good at it. Jimmy was still eight like David. Clark had just turned nine, but was the shyest of the three.
The bus came to the next stop and Lisha stood to get off. “Bye, David. See ya tomorrow.” He nodded but mumbled to himself, “not if I can help it.” Jimmy and Clark had already gotten off several stops back. So David shrugged and guessed he’d be sitting alone for the rest of the trip. That’s why he was surprised when this big boy slid in beside him.
“Hi, you’re David, right? Jimmy’s friend?
“Uh huh.”
“My name’s Greg. How do you like it here in Oakdale?”
This is really weird, David thought. He must be in fifth grade at least so why is he talking to me? And he knows Jimmy too. He ain’t Jimmy’s brother. Jimmy doesn’t have any brothers, just a bratty little sister. But shit, he is being nice to me. David smiled and answered, “Yeah, it’s a nice town.”
Greg went on and told him how his family moved here two years ago and after a while both he and his brother decided it was the best place of all to live. He asked Greg if he liked Halloween. He was going to be a bum this year. Greg kept on talking and David felt more and more at ease. Soon he was giggling at the ten year old’s jokes and when he told him some knock knock jokes he knew, Greg laughed.
“Come on, Davey, here’s our stop.” David had never noticed that Greg was one of the kids who lived in his neighborhood, and mentally began thinking, maybe we can sit together on the bus tomorrow.
The two boys ambled down the street and Greg was talking about the carnival that the Lions Club had sponsored on Labor Day. That was right after David moved in.
“It was great,” David told him.
“What was your favorite ride?”
“I loved them all: the tilt-a-whirl, the ferris wheel, the roller coaster. Well, not the merry-go-round, that’s kind of lame, for little kids.”
“I bet you’d like Riding the Pole!”
David scratched his head. He couldn’t remember that ride, so he shook his head.
“No, it wasn’t at the carnival. But it’s more fun than any of those rides you mentioned, Davey.”
“Wow, really?”
“Yeah, look, this is my house. Come by here Saturday morning, between ten and eleven, and bring fifty cents. You’ll love it! I promise.”
Davey waved goodbye and skipped down to his own house. His mind was racing. Wow, a new friend, a fifth grader even! And he wants to play with me! And he wants let me Ride the Pole! Whatever that is. Oakdale is sure a neat place to live.
.oOo.
Over the next few days, David made sure he sat with Greg both ways on the school bus. Lisha was kinda pissed off, hehe. David learned more about Greg’s brother. Mark was fifteen, in high school, but he liked playing with Greg and his friends. David couldn’t pry any more information out of Greg about Riding the Pole, but he got the feeling it was some kind of secret, and he shouldn’t tell anyone.
David woke up Saturday morning and put on his old play clothes. Mama liked to sleep late on the weekend, so he made himself a bowl of Frosted Flakes and plopped down in front of the TV to watch some cartoons.
