Giving into Darkness (part 5)

(Sorry it took so long for a part 5, work and real life things have taken up my spare time however I can finally add another part. Hope you guys enjoy.)

Part Five

She had to return to work, if she didn’t Hawes and Ethan would become suspicious. The last thing she wanted was for the pair to wonder where she was spending her nights and most of her mornings, she had an apartment on the base and she was sure they were beginning to notice her recent departures. Ethan had begun to notice her sudden mood shift and had even mentioned it one day, she had to be more careful. She wanted to continue her relationship with Leon and to do that she must remain normal to her co workers. The pair had been carrying on for a few weeks now without being caught and she wouldn’t be the one screw things up, “Hey Sage, something on your mind?” glancing up she located the source of the voice speaking to her, Ethan was studying her closely.
“Yeah why do you ask?” he gave a shrug and shifted some paperwork, “You just seem…different.”
“Well I’m getting more sleep lately.” she said with a smirk, truth be told she didn’t get much sleep at all. Shaking her head she added a few more notes to her report and added, “Other than that nothing to report.”
“Oh, so you want to join us for some drinks tonight?” Tonight, she had promised Leon she’d have dinner with him in the southern part of the city to avoid prying eyes.
“No can do, got plans to curl up with a book and call it an early night.”
“Oh come on Sage you never come hang anymore.” his voice took on a whiny tone and she found it strangely grating, when had Ethan become annoying? Perhaps he had always been and she never noticed it till now, “Ethan I said no, I’m not in the mood.” Giving another light shrug he said, “Suit yourself.” his behavior shifted and he seemed to be angry now as he kicked things around and grabbed his jacket, “See you tomorrow.” watching him leave she wondered if he would become a problem, than again she was probably being paranoid.

“Things going okay?” at first she didn’t seem to hear him, “Yo, Earth to Sage.” he lightly bonked her head drawing her from her daze.
“Hmm, oh yeah sorry. You were saying?”
“I asked if you were okay but after that I have to really question if you are.” something was on her mind and he could tell, she was distant and distracted.
“Just a lot on my mind is all.” she took a bite of her steak and chased it down with a swig of merlot.
