CHAPTER TWENTY – NINE

Two weeks later, we closed on the new home and moved in over the weekend. I left my original house furnished just by moving clothes and personal items. “Tai was involved in a horrific car accident which killed her entire family. She had no other family here, so Tessa Williamson and I agreed to foster her for the time being.”, I stated.

“So, you and Tessa Williamson huh? I had not heard you were seeing anyone. In fact, I stopped at your house a few times, but you are never home.”, Lexie admitted.

“I bought another house on Junius Street across town where the three of us live together. Not really sure where the whole thing will end up, but Tessa is hoping to adopt Tai in the future.”, I stated.

“Wow, I had no idea you and Tessa were that serious. I’m happy for you.”, Lexie answered.

“And how about you Lex, how are you?”, I asked.

“I work a lot now hoping to move up the ranks. I’m engaged to Cody finally after all this time. We are both trying to make it work.”, she confessed.

“I’m glad to hear you’re doing well, Lex.”, I remarked, just as Tai came walking back.

“Here Chwis.”, Tai said, handing me a bottle of water.

I’m not sure how Lexie Thomas felt walking away but he did hurt me somewhat to see her again. I was head over heels in love with Lexie and knew that there would always be some affection in my heart for me. It also hurt to think that she and Cody were engaged although I did hope maybe this time, they could make it work. I miss Lexie’s parents and grandparents as well; they were wonderful people.

The next few months flew by and we were approaching Christmas which was a little over a month away. One day while Tessa was off at home with Tai, I decided to stop at her parents’ house after calling and making sure they were home. I drove straight over from the gym and arrived there a few minutes later. This was a little tricky because we over lived around the corner. I rang the doorbell and Beth let me in right away. Since I wanted this to be kept a secret I did not waste any time beating around the bush.

“I stopped here to ask you a very important question. I would like to have your permission to marry Tessa.”, I stated.

“Beth and I have talked about this numerous times, Chris. We think the world of you and no one has ever made Tessa as happy as she is now. We give you our permission but more so we welcome you to our family. But you have to do one thing before you get married.”, he advised.

“I think I can do that. But not until after I give her the ring. I don’t want her to be suspicious.”, I replied.

“Fair enough, Chris.”, Bill said, shaking my hand.

I went home that night and after I had read Tai her nightly story and worked with her flashcards, I got in bed with Tessa. I dropped off Tai with Beth and promised to be back in the early afternoon. I drove straight to Martin’s Jewelers when I had bought Lexie’s ring earlier. I met with one of the sales ladies and explained my situation. I did not want to give Tessa the ring I had bought for Lexie. I wanted an entirely different ring for Tessa. I had paid about eleven thousand or so for Lexie’s ring a few years earlier. The store owner came over and we worked out a deal when he gave me seven thousand five hundred in store credit for the trade in.

When I saw the ring in the case, I knew it was the one. I pointed it out and the saleslady smiled as she took it out of the case. She explained that this was a Pavonia Oval Ring with a four carat center stone. Down the sides were another half carat of Pave Set round stones split and meeting at the bottom shank of the ring. There was no doubt this was the ring for Tessa.

Since I had been there several times before, I was discounted on the ring to a little over thirteen thousand five hundred dollars which included both wedding bands.
